Diving in Moalboal: A World-Class Experience
Moalboal, nestled along the coastline of Cebu, is one of Southeast Asia's top dive destinations. From its world-famous sardine run to dramatic wall dives at Pescador Island, there is something here for every level of diver — beginner to technical.
The town's dive scene is concentrated around Panagsama Beach, where more than a dozen operators compete for business. This guide cuts through the noise to show you exactly what each one offers and at what price.
Moalboal's Top Dive Sites
1. The Sardine Run
Millions of sardines form synchronized, shimmering schools just a few meters off Panagsama Beach. This phenomenon occurs year-round, making it Moalboal's single most iconic experience. Dive early morning for clearest water and fewer crowds.
2. Pescador Island
A 20-minute boat ride from shore. Vibrant coral reefs, caverns, tunnels, and frequent sightings of reef sharks, parrotfish, and pelagics. One of Cebu's most iconic dive sites.
3. Turtle Point
Resident green sea turtles that are completely accustomed to divers. Perfect for beginners and snorkelers. Best shallow reef dive in the area.
4. The Sunken Forest
Submerged tree trunks encrusted in coral create an eerie, surreal dive. Excellent for underwater photography.

Tips for Your Moalboal Dive Trip
- Plan for multiple dives — the variety of sites means you'll want at least 3–4 dives to do the area justice
- Bring an underwater camera — the sardine run is unmissable and almost impossible to capture adequately with a phone
- Dive November–May — dry season means calmer seas and peak visibility (15–30m+)
- Book courses in advance — popular operators fill up fast in peak season
- Respect the environment — do not touch coral, feed fish, or disturb turtles
For Beginners
If you've never dived before, Moalboal is an excellent place to start. Cebu Seaview, Magic Island, and Neptune all offer beginner-friendly intro dives (typically PHP 1,200–1,500 for a 30-minute shallow intro) with patient instructors and calm conditions. Turtle Point and the house reef off Panagsama Beach are ideal first dives.
For Technical & Advanced Divers
Savedra and Dive Moalboal are the go-to operators for technical diving. Pescador Island's wall dives, drift dives, and cavern sections give experienced divers a proper challenge. Multiple dive safaris to more remote sites can also be arranged.
