Why Go
Kandungaw Peak, situated in the mountains of Dalaguete near Moalboal, offers what many hikers call the best panoramic view in all of Cebu. From the limestone summit you can see the jagged southern coastline, distant islands, and on clear days the mountains of Negros across the Tañon Strait. It's a world completely different from the beach and reef — and most visitors to Moalboal never bother to find it.
"Moalboal is all about the sea, the lively town, the underwater world. But up here, it's a different kind of peace — a different kind of beauty." — Guest review from a couple who started in Moalboal
Getting There from Moalboal
- Take a bus or van from Moalboal towards Dalaguete (Cebu's vegetable basket, ~45 minutes)
- From Dalaguete town, hire a tricycle to the jump-off point in Barangay Mantalongon (~15 minutes)
- The hike begins from the jump-off — hire a local guide at the barangay for PHP 200–300
Total travel time from Moalboal to trailhead: approximately 1 hour. Plan a full day trip.
The Trail
The hike starts through rolling fields and the gentle sounds of village life. After the first 30 minutes the trail steepens considerably, with rocky limestone sections that require both hands. The terrain alternates between shaded forest canopy and open exposed ridgelines. At the summit, dramatic limestone rock formations make for spectacular photos.
Trail Features
- Limestone cliffs — challenging sections near the summit that add to the adventure
- Rest clearings — small open areas with views partway up where you can catch breath
- Native flora — the trail passes through lush vegetation with native plants and bird life
- Summit rocks — large limestone outcrops at the top create dramatic photo opportunities
What Visitors Say

- Challenging but rewarding — not a casual stroll, but appropriate for anyone in average fitness with proper footwear
- Friendly locals and guides — local guides are warm and knowledgeable, weaving local folklore into the experience
- Wildlife — native birds, plants, and occasional wildlife sightings add to the experience
- Relatively uncrowded — far fewer tourists than beach attractions, much more peaceful
Essential Tips
- Start early — begin at dawn to avoid midday heat and see the sunrise from the summit
- Bring enough water — at least 1.5 litres per person; heat and humidity drain you fast
- Proper footwear is mandatory — sturdy hiking shoes with grip for rocky terrain
- Hire a guide — supports the local community, keeps you on the safest path, and enriches the experience significantly
- Leave no trace — carry all rubbish back down; keep the trail clean for future visitors
- Check the weather — rainy season (June–October) makes the trail slippery; dry season (November–May) is ideal
Nearby Attractions
On the way back from Kandungaw, consider stopping at Kawasan Falls in Badian (a multi-tiered turquoise waterfall, one of Cebu's most beautiful natural sights, about 45 minutes from Moalboal). The combination of Kandungaw Peak in the morning and Kawasan Falls in the afternoon makes for one of the best full-day land adventures in southern Cebu.
